THE FUTURE TENSE OF INTENTION

When an intention is made, near future is often referred to by using ‘going to’. ‘Going to’ points to the following conditions:-

1.  Intention; as:-

a.  We are going to plant some orange tree in our garden.

b.  Are you going to learn French?

2.  Likely/probable; as:-

a.  Be careful! The ice is going to crack.

b.  How long is this shortage going to continue?

3.  Future time when there is no reference to external circumstances; as:-

a.  She is going to get a book next week. (She will get a book next week)

b.  I am going to tell you a story. (I shall tell you a story)
