INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS



A_What’, ‘which’, ‘who’, ‘whose’, ‘whom’, ‘why’, ‘where’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ are this kind of pronouns. These are used to ask questions.

B_What’ is used for a task, profession or thing in normal form; as :

1_What have you been doing for so long?

2_What did the king find when he went round his kingdom?

3_What were the feelings of the Zamindar after slaughter of Jolly?

C_Which’ is used for things having no life. Under certain conditions, it is also used for persons; as :

1_Which of the two houses do you prefer?

2_Which wars were fought in the twentieth century?

3_Which of your friends do you trust most?

D_‘Who’, ‘whose’ and ‘whom’ are used for animate things or persons; as :

1_Who is your favourite author?              

2_Whose book is this?                      

3_Whom do you want to speak to? 

Correct use of interrogative pronouns

Incorrect:

1_Who did you give the message?

2_Who is more beautiful Kanta or Shanta?

3_The houses of whose are you looking for?

4_What are the persons we should avoid?

5_Whom, do you think, will win the competition?

Correct:

1_Whom did you give the message?

2_Which is more beautiful, Kanta or Shanta?

3_Whose house are you looking for?

4_Who are the persons we should avoid?

5_Who, do you think, will win the competition?
