INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

 

A_The indefinite pronouns don’t refer to a person or thing in particular. They are used indefinitely in the sentence; as :

1_One cannot say when war will break out.

2_One must be careful about what one says.

3_One must do one’s duty.

4_Some are born great. All are not born rich.

5_Somebody has stolen my book.

6_Nobody has stolen my book.

7_Nobody was there to save the drowning child.

8_Do onto others as you wish to be done by.

9_Few were hurt, many escaped.

10_Everyone believed her.

B_If ‘one’ is used in the sentence, it should be used in the entire sentence; as:

1_One should take care of one’s health.

2_One should love one’s country.

C_He’ or ‘she’ stands after anybody, everybody, anyone, everyone, each etc. as per need; as :

1_He helped everyone of his class-fellows in his distress.

2_I helped everyone of the girls in her studies.

D_But when the gender is indefinite, masculine pronoun is used; as :

1_If anybody helps me, I shall be thankful to him.

2_Everybody must have his say.

3_Everyone has his own ideas on the subject.

4_Anyone can win the prize if he tries for it.

E_Anybody, everybody, anyone, everyone, none, each etc. are used in singular; as :

1_Everyone likes to be called brave.

2_Anyone can answer this question.

3_Each member of the party fired his gun.

4_Anyone could go to him for help.

5_I do not know anyone in this meeting.

6_None of you should leave before I do.

7_None but the wise have the right to speech.
