It is that form of verb which is a verb as well as a noun. Thus it is also called verbal noun; as:- Swimming is a good exercise.
The word ‘Swimming’ is formed
from the verb ‘Swim’ by adding –ing. Therefore it is like a Verb. The word
‘Swimming’ is the name of an action and it is also the Subject of a sentence.
Hence it does the work of a Noun.
The use of gerunds: It can be
used in five ways:
i. _As subject of verb:-
a_There is a world of difference
between seeing and doing.
b_Plucking of flowers is
prohibited.
ii. _As object of transitive verb:-
a_Stop talking nonsense.
b_I like flying kites.
iii. As
object of preposition:-
a_I am fond of swimming.
b_He insisted on joining the
college.
iv. As complement of verb:-
a_Seeing is believing.
b_What I most like is reading.
v. As
absolutely the use of gerunds:-
a_Smoking being his weakness, he
started smoking in the temple.
b_Praising everyone is praising
none.
Some points must be kept in mind
while using gerunds:-
A._Gerunds
are also used after phrases:
a_It is no good punishing the
child.
b_People go to the theatre with a
view to enjoying themselves.
B._Gerunds are used with verbs like avoid,
dislike, intend, enjoy, recollect, hate, dread etc.
a_I intend going to Kashimir this
summer.
b_I dread swimming in the river.
C._Noun or pronoun before gerunds must be
in possessive case:
a_I
dislike your reading cheap novels.
b_You
cannot stop my helping the poor man.
D._Some verbs
such as dissuade, check, succeed, prohibit, hinder, prevent have the use
of gerunds after them:
a_I
prevented him from mixing with gamblers.
b_She
succeeded in making her parents agree to her proposal.
