AUXILIARY VERBS IN PRESENT TENSE
At the time of changing active voice into passive voice, subject and
object are interchanged. Auxiliary verbs
‘will’, ‘shall’, ‘may’, ‘might’, ‘can’, ‘could’, ‘should’, ‘would’, ‘must’,
‘ought to’, ‘used to’ are respectively replaced with ‘will be’, ‘shall be’,
‘may be’, ‘might be’, ‘can be’, ‘could be’, ‘should be’, ‘would be’, ‘must be’,
‘ought to be’, ‘used to be’. Using 3rd form of verb, subject follows
‘by’.
1. Affirmative:
Active
voice :
Subject + Auxiliary verbs + 1st form of Verb + object. |
Passive
voice: Object + Auxiliary verbs + be + 3rd
form of verb + by + Subject. |
a. Active
voice : We should help the poor.
Passive voice : The
poor should be helped by us.
b. Active voice : You must respect your parents.
Passive voice : Your
parents must be respected by you.
2. Negative:
Active
voice :
Subject + Auxiliary verbs + not + 1st form of Verb + object. |
Passive
voice: Object + Auxiliary verbs+ not +be +3rd
form of verb+ by + Subject. |
a. Active
voice : She could not finish the work in time.
Passive voice : The
work could not be finished by her in time.
b. Active voice : I cannot read this letter.
Passive voice : This
letter cannot be read by me.
3. Interrogative:
Active
voice :
Auxiliary verbs + subject + 1st form of Verb + object? |
Passive
voice: Auxiliary verbs + object + be + 3rd
form of verb + by + Subject? |
a. Active
voice : May we help you against your enemies?
Passive voice : May
you be helped by us against your enemies?
b. Active voice : What can I do for you?
Passive voice : What
can be done by me for you?
